Three years ago, I created a blog about how to apply for a UK student visa.
A lot has changed since then, and the rules have been updated significantly. So,
I decided it’s time to make a new blog—and now this blog post—explaining how
things work in 2025, and how you can apply for a UK student visa under the
current rules.
Many people message me asking how to move from
Pakistan to the UK and eventually settle there and get a British passport.
That’s why I’ve started this series, and this is the first post in which I’ll
cover the student visa route, which is one of the most popular ways people have
moved to the UK and gained nationality.
English language is essential. Whether you're
applying for a student visa, work permit, or even UK nationality, English language
proof is mandatory. The best way to demonstrate this is through the IELTS test.
There are two types: IELTS Academic and IELTS General. For a student visa, you
must take IELTS Academic. Most students prepare for 3–6 months, and the test
fee in Pakistan is around PKR 60,000. You need to score between 5.5 to 7.5
bands depending on your level of study and the university's requirements.
Aside from language, one of the biggest
requirements is financial support. Moving countries isn’t free. From applying
to traveling, everything needs money. While scholarships do exist, I haven’t
personally seen anyone who came purely on a full scholarship. So, unless you can
find one—and if you do, please comment and share it with others—you need to be
financially prepared.
In the UK, universities have two main intakes:
January and September. Apply at least three months before your intended intake.
First, take IELTS, then apply for admission. You can apply to UK universities
via www.ucas.com.
Whether you’re a local UK student or from abroad, everyone must apply through
this platform. You can choose five universities—preferably in one city like
London—for better planning. Apply to five, and you may receive offers from two
or three.
Have your academic documents ready: Matric,
F.Sc, Bachelor’s (if applying for Master’s), and your IELTS certificate. I
recommend coming for a master’s degree, not a Bachelor’s, because a bachelor’s
program takes three years and is more expensive. Master’s degrees in the UK are
usually one year, or two years if it includes a research program. Tuition for a
bachelors may cost around PKR 1.2 to 1.6 crore, while a master’s can range
between PKR 60 to 80 lakh.
After receiving a conditional offer letter,
review the terms and conditions carefully. Once you accept, you will receive an
unconditional offer. This letter will include your tuition fees, payment
deadlines, class start and end dates, and more. Then the university will ask
for your documents and bank statement. Your bank statement should be recent
(within 28 days) and must show the required funds without recent transactions.
For example, if you need PKR 1 crore, it should appear in the account as a lump
sum and not be touched until the visa process is complete.
Living costs also need to be shown. If your
university is in London, you must show around £13,347 (PKR 49 lakh). If it’s
outside London, the requirement is £10,224. So, if your tuition is £15,000 and
you paid £5,000, your account must show the remaining £10,000 plus the required
living cost amount.
Once your finances are in order, the
university will issue a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) letter.
Some students may be interviewed before getting the CAS—this is called a
pre-CAS interview.
With the CAS in hand, you’ll apply for the
visa. The next step is the TB test, which you must take at an approved center
like Aziz Medical Center in Lahore. The fee is around PKR 15,000. If the test
is clear, you can proceed with your visa application.
Visa application fees are currently £524
(around PKR 192,000). After submitting your application on the UK government
website, you’ll also need to pay the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) to
access the UK's NHS. For one year, it costs £776 (about PKR 285,000).
Bachelor’s students pay for 3 years upfront; master’s students usually for 1.5
years.
After payment, you'll receive a checklist and
a Unique Application Number (UAN). Then you must book an appointment with VFS
Global. At your appointment, they’ll collect your biometrics, scan your
documents, and send them to the UK authorities. You also hand in your passport,
and the visa typically arrives within 15 working days.
Now about dependents: You cannot bring your
parents or adult siblings as dependents. Only your spouse and children under 18
are eligible. However, dependents are allowed only if you're enrolled in a
master’s with research program (usually 2 years). Bachelor’s and 1-year
master’s students cannot bring dependents.
The UK student visa is a 10-year route to
settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain). If you study, then get a PSW (Post
Study Work) visa for 2 years, and later switch to a Skilled Worker visa, you
can build up the 10 years needed for PR. For example, 1 year Master’s + 2 years
PSW + 7 years on another visa type (e.g., PhD or Skilled Worker) can get you to
permanent residency. After holding PR (ILR) for one more year, you become
eligible for UK nationality.
However, if you switch directly to a Skilled
Worker visa, you can get PR in 5 years. In the past, students could switch to
Skilled Worker before completing studies, but now you must finish your degree.
If you get a job offer during your studies, you must return to Pakistan and
apply for a new visa from there. You cannot switch visa types inside the UK as
a student.
This is the complete process of applying for a
UK student visa. I hope you found this guide helpful. If you did, please like,
